What is Chicken Hill?

From the late 1800’s to the 1960’s, the center of Setauket was known as Chicken Hill.

Chicken Hill was largely a working class community with hundreds of men, women and children employed at the Setauket Rubber Factory.

The population of the area included Native Americans and African Americans, as well as newly arrived immigrants – Russians, Poles, Lithuanians, Romanians, Irish, and Italians. The name “Chicken Hill” was a derogatory name applied to the minority community because it seemed that everybody in the area was raising chickens to supplement their income.

Industrious, hardworking, and determined – the residents of Chicken Hill helped build the foundation of today’s Three Villages.

Every August, the Three Village Community Trust holds the Chicken Hill Country Picnic to celebrate an important part of our shared heritage and the American experience.
